I’m a little fickle when it comes to make-up application. Sometimes I like to take my time and spend an hour painting my face, enjoying every brush stroke and savouring the slowness of the process (which doesn’t necessarily mean I add more products, but definitely includes watching my favourite TV shows and sipping on a soothing cup of tea). Other times, I only give myself 10 minutes in-between my morning gym session and heading off to work. Thinking about it, it’s not necessarily me that’s fickle but my schedule that’s unpredictable or simply too packed at times, so unsurprisingly I welcome any product that’s quick and easy to use.
Clinique Super City Block BB Cushion Compact
That’s where the new Clinique Super City Block BB Cushion Compact comes in! I’ve tried cushion foundations before, especially since they are such a hype in Asia. I have to say, while I love the ease of application, Asian cushion foundations usually have a dewy finish and adding the extra step of a setting powder needed for my oily t-zone kind of defeats the whole point of me using them for their practicality. Though, when Fenwick exclusively launched the Clinique Super City Block BB Cushion Compact in the UK, I was more than curious to try it as I’ve heard great things about its finish. So on the first day of Fenwick’s launch, I headed down to their Bond Street store to have a look at it myself. The assistants at Fenwick were so lovely and matched me up with the right shade, giving me some tips on how to use the foundation most effectively. Since then, I’ve pretty much used it every single day!
Verdict: Highly recommended! (But let’s break down why.)
Clinique Super City Block BB Cushion Compact comes in the typical cushion foundation packaging: Pre-soaked cushion, covered by a lid that holds the sponge with a mirror inside. While it seems like any other cushion foundation packaging, the overall feel of it and its closing mechanism are sturdier than drugstore versions. Like other cushion foundations, you use the sponge applicator to gently pat the product onto your face. While the cushion is still fresh, the sponge picks up a lot of product at once, so press it only gently (will dry slowly after longer exposure and usage). The sponge applicator seems a bit more “sponge-y” instead of “rubbery” than my Etude House sponge, which means it absorbs more product, but also results is not as dewy but satin (which I prefer!).
Texture, Coverage & Finish
The main reason why I’ve been using the Clinique Super City Block BB Cushion Compact on a daily basis is the finish it gives. I didn’t expect much when I first tried it because BB cremes are usually too dewy for my combination skin and when I applied the Clinique Super City Block BB Cushion Compact it was creamier than expected. You can feel the foundation like heavy moisturiser on your skin, which I didn’t take as a good sign. To my surprise though, once it oxidizes the finish is not too dewy (or even greasy like a lot of BB cremes), but very natural/satin with medium coverage. It evens out any redness perfectly and I only add a little concealer to really bad blemishes, but otherwise it covers up quite decently. It lasts around 5-7hours before I need to touch it up a little (especially on my T-zone). At Fenwick I was colour matched and got the Clinique Super City Block BB Cushion Compact in Moderately Fair. It has a pink undertone, but once it sets in it matches my skin tone.
