    Time to Party

The story of my relationship with Gin and Tonic is the story of a journey. From absolute distaste to one of my favourite drinks. Of course, I knew it was a popular drink, my best friend Emma has been loving it. But the thing is, I’m from Germany and we like our beer. It’s easy, it’s refreshing and goes well with snacks (and I looove beer snacks). Plus, the taste of tonic was just completely foreign to me. That’s where the story could have ended. The problem is that beer is not for the calorie conscious, and my metabolism is definitely slowing down. So it was time to prioritise delicious food over beer consumption and a new party companion had to be found.

At the same time, I started to be okay with Gin and Tonic. As often as it was served at blogger events and parties, it was just more convenient to be less picky about my drink. Besides the regular G&T, I also got to try variations: variations with different tonics, variations with different gins, variations that included fruits or herbs. Also, becoming more interested in cocktails showed me all the options you had for G&T combinations, simply limitless! And the best thing? Gin and Tonic actually doesn’t have many calories thanks to the tonic.

    Pomegranate Gin and Tonic

For the upcoming festivities, I created a simple and refreshing Pomegranate Gin and Tonic with seasonal pomegranate. Pomegranate is my absolute favourite fruit, I could eat one every single day. Honestly. And I love how bright it is. Perfect for these grey Winter days. For this drink, I picked Martin Miller’s Westbourne Dry Gin as its stronger flavour won’t be overshadowed by the pomegranate and the tonic. Just makes the drink way more interesting.

    Prep Time: 5 min | Yield: 1

    • Martin Miller’s Westbourne Dry Gin* 50ml
    • Pomegranate Juice 50ml
    • Fever Tree Aromatic Tonic 150ml
    • Ice cubes
    • Fresh Pomegranate
    • Sprigs of Thyme

    1. In a shaker, add 50ml Westbourne Strength gin, 50ml pomegranate juice, and a handful of ice cubes. Shake well.
    2. Fill the glass halfway with ice cubes, add some pomegranate.
    3. Pour over shaker content, top off with Fever Tree Aromatic tonic water. Garnish with thyme and enjoy.

     Martin Miller’s Westbourne Dry Gin

I usually drink Martin Miller’s Gin, but got introduced to Westbourne Strength at a Masterclass they hosted a few weeks ago. It was such a fun evening, where we could try all of their different gins. While most people preferred the original because of its light taste, I’m actually a fan of the Westbourne Strength. Especially in a shot, it was just a little bit more interesting to taste.

It’s a little stronger (at 45.2%) and has a richer, more complex taste. They recommend it for drinks like Martinis or Negronis, but I actually really like it in my G&T, when I mix it with “stronger” flavoured ingredients such as the pomegranate juice. Westbourne Strength has won many awards, is loved by bartenders who were looking for a  more ‘old school’ version of the original and also tastes great by itself.

According to Martin Miller’s, the gentle and soft mouth feel of their gins is all thanks to the quality of the water they use. Found in the small Icelandic village of Borgarnes, it’s so pure, it doesn’t need extra treatment. I love the simplicity of it: Get amazing water, create amazing gins.
